Three things I changed my mind about
Changing your mind is underrated. Here are a few small examples.
Changing your mind has a bad reputation. We treat it as a weakness, when really it's just evidence that you were paying attention. Here are three small ones from the past year.
1. Mornings
I spent years insisting I was "not a morning person," as though it were a fixed trait like eye color. It turns out I was just going to bed too late. The identity was doing a lot of work to protect a habit.
2. Long books
I used to think finishing every book I started was a kind of discipline. Now I think it's a tax on curiosity. Abandoning a book you're not enjoying frees you to find one you will.
3. Strong opinions
I once admired people with strong opinions on everything. These days I'm more impressed by people who can say "I don't know" without flinching. Certainty is cheap; calibrated uncertainty is rare.
None of these are profound on their own. But added up, the willingness to revise is maybe the most useful habit I have.
